Mahashivratri – Sacred Night of Shiva : Detailed Vidhi

Mahashivratri is a powerful night dedicated to Lord Shiva, honoring life, existence, and inner awakening.

Devotees invoke Sadasiva and perform night-long prayers divided into four Praharas, supported by mantras and sacred offerings.

This auspicious observance helps purify the mind, deepen devotion, and align one’s consciousness with the divine energy of Shiva.

Visualise the supreme divine personality – Sadasiva, (having 5 headsand 10 hands).

It is Sadasiva ( highest form of shiva) who is invoked for consecration of the Sivalingam. (refer to image)

After visualising Sadasiva, mentally invite him and the divine mother Adiparasakti, to reside in the Sivalingam in front of you.

After performing this invitation, one must proceed with the main Mahashivratri puja. The night long Puja is divided into 4 Praharas ( having 3 hours each) After performing the specific prahara puja one must perform Panchopachara puja to Sivalingam.

Glossory = Panchopachara puja and Mantras Format of the Prahara Puja = Mantra x no. of repititions + materials to offer

The Maha Nishita Kaal Puja Time is the most sacred time to perform your Shiv Puja, that is if you cannot observe all the Prahars.
